Montreal Backyards 1

The facade of a building it's usually its most attractive side. However, there's something about the "B side" of buildings that remains worthy of sketching.
I'm trying to use more colors and accentuate the shadows.  I think the drawing looks kind of flat though.

Wow! J'aime tes noirs et blancs, mais en couleurs, c'est carrément superbe! Super dessin!

Love the change to color - and really enjoy the urban view of the "backside." We had a fabulous vacation in Montreal last spring - and I look back at my sketchbook regularly to revisit....

I wish I had some "aha" comment to "fix" the flatness you mention. I can see what you mean. but I really love the blocks of bright color, and the overlays on the trees and wires. I'll be back.

I love it! You did a fantastic job with your perspective and color. I'm not sure what the building actually looked like (not that you haven't captured it here!), but, was there an overhang of the roof? If there was, you could put a shadow under the eve to pop it out. If it didn't overhang, maybe it looks flat because it is sort of flat? In the recessed area to the left, I think you could darken the area closest to the building to have more contrast there. (I'm no expert, just learning myself!)

Thank you all for your comments, I really appreciate them. Raena: no, there is no overhang, I just couldn't reflect the distance between the brick wall (a garage) and the rest of the house. I'm around that spot frequently, so I'll try to make another sketch from a different angle.

I love this. the red bricck looks so warm and you're right about the 'b' side - it often gets neglected. This has a lovely feel to it.
